An ink jet printer is described which has check valves in both the ink supply line and the ink return line to prevent reverse flow in the ink lines and thereby prevent the siphoning effect and entry of contamination into the printhead cavity that such reverse flow can cause.

During periods when the printhead is not in operation, during connection of disconnection of ink lines and transportation of the printhead 10, ink can move backward in the ink supply line 11, which includes filter 12, and ink return line 14. This reverse flow is generally the result of siphoning effects and the reverse flow in the ink lines can draw contamination into the printhead cavity, causing clogged or misdirected jets.

One way in which reverse flow can occur is due to siphoning effects, whereby ink begins moving backward in the return line 14, as shown by the dotted arrow
16. In this case, contaminants present at any potentially dirty line connection 18 are drawn into the printhead cavity 20. These contaminants may then become lodged in the nozzles 22, where they cause clogged or misdirected jets.

Another way in which reverse flow can occur is due to siphoning effects, whereby ink begins moving backward in the supply line 11, as shown by dotted arrow 24.
