Surge Pressure Orificed Check Valve

An improved ink jet printing system is described in which a check valve of specific design is placed in both the ink inlet and ink exit lines.

The system includes an ink jet head 10 which has ink supplied from reservoir 12 at a predetermined pressure from pump 14 through line 16. An inlet check valve 18 is provided which has a predetermined flow resistance to eliminate surge pressure produced by the inertia of the translating fluid column in the line 16 from entering the ink jet cavity. An exit check valve 20 is provided which has an opening pressure greater than the normal operating pressure of the print head. This valve also prevents the surge pressure induced into exit line 22 from entering the ink jet head 10 by using the surge pressure to keep the check valve closed. Removal of gases which may become trapped in the ink jet head cavity can be accomplished by periodically exceeding the check valve 20 opening pressure to permit the gases to escape.
