Prevention of Contamination During Machining Operation

Contamination of an electromagnetic rotary actuator or motor by machining debris, during machining of a load support platform rotatable with the spindle, is prevented by means of a rubber actuator cover and an inflatable collar around the platform.

As shown in the drawings, a rotary actuator 10 of the moving coil motor type provides its output torque by way of a load support platform 11 attached to the coil and rotatable about a spindle 12. Since the mechanism to be rotated must be precisely positioned relative to the body of the actuator, various features (not shown) have to be accurately machined on the surface of the platform 11.

To protect the actuator during the machining operation, a rubber cover is provided for the body of the actuator. The cover has an inflatable collar 13 which is inflated during machining to prevent debris entering the actuator around the spindle. When the machining operation is finished, external debris can be washed from the cover prior to its removal after deflation of the collar.
