Duplexing Printer

There is shown and described a dual carrier printer for printing on both sides of a sheet using a single set of print electronics shared in an alternate manner by each carrier. The carriers are linked on a common escapement mechanism.

In the figures, carriers 2 and 4 are shown with a sheet 6 between them. Printhead 8, which may be a thermal transfer-type printhead, is pivotable about post 10 mounted on carrier 2. Likewise, printhead 12 pivots about post 14 on carrier 4. The ribbon (not shown) is fed in a conventional manner between the printheads and sheet 6. Each of the carriers 2 and 4 also has mounted thereon one of the backup rollers or platens 18 and 16, respectively, for the other printhead. One motor 24 is provided for a belt drive (not shown) for each carrier to maintain an opposing relationship between the carriers at all escapement positions.

Flexible thin metal sheets 28 and 30 are provided to sandwich the sheet 6 so it can be fed between the moving carriers without damage.
