Micro Miniaturized Replacement Connector

The micro miniaturized replacement connector is a means of reworking a circuit board that has a defective connector or plated through hole.

As shown in Fig. 1, the connector comprises a spring contact connector design 1 with a compressible body 2 which applies the retention force needed to position and retain the connector for resoldering of the device to the desired circuit pad. The body 2 of the unit is coated with TEFLON* 3 which insulates it from the circuit board internal planes. The base 4 of the device is clear of insulation for a short distance to allow for soldering of the connector to the circuit board pad 5. A hole is drilled through the circuit board to remove the faulty plated through hole. The connector is then aligned and pressed into the circuit board, as shown in Fig. 2. The unit is then soldered to its encircling pad, and a flexible top cap seal 6 is placed at the area where the connector body regresses from the top of the circuit board. This seal prevents the internal area from becoming exposed to a hostile atmosphere.

The composition of the flexible seal, such as polyimide or polyurethane, and its interaction with the coated body allows for circuit board expansion and contraction caused by thermal cycling and thus prevents cracking of the solder joint. In effect, the device slips inside the hole and remains constant with the solder joint.
