Abstract

Standard 2.5 mm sample tubes can be used in a nuclear magnetic resonance spinner turbine instead of expensive necked down 5.0 mm sample tubes. The spinner turbine 10 (Fig. 1) is modified by machining the cone 15 on the bottom of the turbine. A groove 16 is machined near the bottom of the cone for holding a small flexible O-ring 17 which is inserted into the groove 16 after circumferentially spaced slots 20 are longitudinally cut from cone 15. Slots 20 create flexible vanes or fingers for providing low pressure contact points to grip the 2.5 mm sample tube when the O-ring is in place.

The turbine 10 in Fig. 3 has all of the features of the turbine 10 in Fig. 1 but the 2.5 mm channel 11 is tapered at its upper end so that when the sample tube reaches the end of the channel 11 it is exactly centered and secured at the top of the turbine. With uniform tube lengths, this also establishes a reproducible extension of the tube into the probe body (not shown).
