Surface Analyzer

To determine the amount of wear, scratches, and defects on the surface of small areas of a sample, an optical noncontact technique is employed.

The optical system uses a microscope 1 that magnifies the surface of the sample 2 that is to be analyzed. The resulting image is filtered by filter 8 and transferred to a video camera 3. The image is passed to a full screen digitizer 4, and projected onto a standard TV monitor 5. The operator, by means of a keyboard 9 and small computer 6, controls the area to be scanned and digitized by moving an XY cursor on the TV screen which is superimposed on the image of the sample. Once the position of the scan is selected, the resulting scan is digitized and stored in a computer memory 10. The data is transferred to the small computer or microprocessor 6, where standard algorithms manipulate and process the information. The resultant numerical output characterizing the surface of the sample, i.e., roughness and scratch locations, is projected onto the TV screen and, at the same time, transmitted to a small printer 7.
