Abstract

The input to the contact shear, place and reflow station consists of a drum 10 of adhesive coated paper 12 containing water soluble flux. Contact strips 14 are placed in parallel across the roll of adhesive coated paper. The drum 10 containing the contact strips 14 is placed on a shaft 16 located on the contact and housing assembly machine. The adhesive coated paper 12 is threaded through a knife blade 18 on to a takeup reel 20. The knife edge or blade 18 peels the contact strips 14 from the paper 12. The strips are pushed on to the strip feed rail 22 by a cylinder 24. All the movements of the takeup reel and cylinder are synchronized with the operating speed of the contact feed station.

The drum 10 containing the contact strips 14 is placed on a shaft 16 located on the contact and housing assembly machine. The adhesive coated paper 12 is threaded through a knife blade 18 on to a takeup reel 20. The knife edge or blade 18 peels the contact strips 14 from the paper 12. The strips are pushed on to the strip feed rail 22 by a cylinder 24. All the movements of the takeup reel and cylinder are synchronized with the operating speed of the contact feed station.

The contact strips 14 are pushed down the feed rail 22 into the "group contact" shear station 26. The shear station 26 is cam actuated, and shears the contact strip into four sets of 12 contacts.

The following contact strip 14 pushes the sheared sets into the group spacing cam 28 where each set of 12 contacts is aligned with the card fingers. The pickup head assembly 30, which contains heating elements, moves into place and picks up the contacts and places them on cards. The heating elements cause solder reflow, and the pickup head then moves away. The manufacturing tab is then sheared off at the next station.

It should be appreciated that the "group contact" shear station 26 could be followed by an individual contact shear station. Of cour...
