Self Aligning Shipping Screw System

A typewriter, when shipped, is subject to damage unless the typewriter frame 10 is held rigidly with respect to the cover 12.

The cover 12 is provided with a countersunk conically shaped surface 14 to mate with the conical head 16 of the shipping screw 18.

The threaded portion 20 of the shipping screw 18, when inserted with automated equipment, will tend to be guided to its appropriate hole by the conical surface 14. The threaded portion may then engage the threaded portion 22 on the typewriter frame 10. The head 24 of the screw 18 is further configured with relatively gross surface irregularities to allow grasping by the fingers and unthreading of the screw 18 from the typewriter frame 10 with only the use of the fingers.

As screw 18 is tightened with respect to frame 10, the conical head 16 will engage countersink 14 to add substantially greater lateral resistance to shifting.
