Abstract

In high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), it is common to mix two or more solvents. Shown in the drawing is a mixer 1 having an inlet 2 for receiving solvents that have been previously mixed to a certain degree. Mixer 1 includes a cylindrical chamber 3 closed off at one side by a glass plug 4. A series of baffles 5 on plug 4 promote turbulence and mixing within chamber 3. A star bar 6, driven by a magnetic stirrer 7, is located in chamber 3 and rotates about an axis coaxial with the axis of chamber 3. An outlet 8 receives liquids from the side of chamber 3 opposite to that at which inlet 2 introduces the liquids into the chamber. Rotation of star bar 6 thoroughly mixes the solvents to assure a uniform mixture.
