As a Timing Analysis (TA) run is made, data associated with the Primary Inputs (PIs) and Primary Outputs (POs) in the partition are saved. Since this data is intended for partition(s) other than the current partition, a Primary Input would become Primary Output of its adjacent partition. Its arrival time and slack values are converted to required arrival time. Similarly, a Primary Output would be saved as a Primary Input with a defined arrival time.

The data set on which this information is saved is to be automatically accessed, updated, and maintained. By using this data set, setting of Primary Inputs and Primary Outputs in a partition can be automated, thereby reducing potential errors in manual methods.

Information in the master data set can be manipulated under the user's controls. In general, these controls can be summarized as follows:

Under user control, TA is able to access the data set for each edge of a PI of a given partition. The arrival time and sigma pairs at the edge for each PO in the net but not in the same partition are examined. For long path runs, the pair with the maximum (nominal + beta sigma) point is returned (minimum (nominal - beta sigma) point for short path runs).
