Hardware Error Log for Processors

A hardware error log provides a history of machine errors, without any software support, enabling a customer engineer (CE) to retrieve the stored error information quickly end easily via the CE or Programmer's Console for problem isolation.

The hardware error log is described in connection with the IBM Series/1 computer. The log provides a history of errors which have occurred since power- on to help the CE to determine machine status. Errors are logged in 64 local store registers that are cleared at power-on and that, at any point in time, will contain the last 64 errors. Data in the log includes: Invalid Storage Address, Specification Check, Storage Parity, Input/Output (I/O) Check with Sequence Indicator, CPU Control Check, Timer Overrun, Storage Protect Violation, Operate I/O (OIO) Condition Codes (Busy after Reset, Command Reject, and Interface Data Check), and Priority Interrupt Condition Codes (Exception: Attention and Exception).

Access to the log can be accomplished easily and quickly via the CE/Programmer's Console. This is done by selecting the Lock Key, Hex Data Keys 'CE00', and the Store Key. The most current entry will be placed in the data lights of the console. To display the next entry, the Lock Key is depressed again.

During Power On Reset (POR) Microdiagnostics, the error log is set to zeros. Thus, when the data lights are x'0000' after the key selection process above, the last log entry has been reached. If mo...
