Dioctyl Phthalate Absorber

A high-density, open celled, vinyl-nitrile sponge is formed of the described material in order to render the sponge absorptive of dioctyl phthalate (DOP), and resistant to ozone.

The following formulation is mixed, using a rubber mill. It is then compression molded into a desired shape, and cured for about ten minutes at about 325 degrees F, followed by postcuring for about fifteen minutes at about 250 degrees F. The resulting polymer-matrix sponge has a density of about 30 pounds per cubic foot, and has from 80 to 100 open cellular-structure pores per surface square inch.
