The occurrence of an event can be used to turn on a data recorder. An indication of the event is fed to the recorder after a delay.

Aperiodic events (for example, seismic events, nuclear excursions, stellar events, failure of mechanical mechanisms, failure of circuits during reliability testing) are characterized by long periods of inactivity followed by sudden activity of interest to observers. The use of recorders having inertial mechanisms to drive a recording medium (such as a strip chart recorder) presents two primary problems: (1) if the drive mechanism is off, and then turned on during or by the event, part of the data is lost during accelerations of the drive from zero to operating speed; and (2) if the drive mechanism is left on at all times, the recording medium is consumed mostly during times of no interest to the observer. Further, if the drive mechanism is left on at all times at a very slow speed (to conserve the recording medium), the signal will be recorded with reduced resolution and increased susceptibility to noise.

These problems are solved by using the event signal to start the drive mechanism, and recording a delayed replica of the event signal, the delay time being at least as much as the drive mechanism requires to come up to operational speed.
