Abstract

Hardware that performs alignment and sign propagation functions for halfword operands from storage is invoked by a halfword align micro-order HWALIGN. The alignment function is performed according to the byte boundary of the storage operand accessed by a halfword instruction, as indicated by a predetermined counter in the system.

Halfword Alignment

Hardware that performs alignment and sign propagation functions for halfword operands from storage is invoked by a halfword align micro-order HWALIGN. The alignment function is performed according to the byte boundary of the storage operand accessed by a halfword instruction, as indicated by a predetermined counter in the system.

Provisions are made to insure that the aligned data with the propagated sign can be placed in a backup portion of the instruction execution unit data flow so that local storage address register trap conditions can be avoided.
