Abstract

Conventional wire matrix printers may include 9 wires for printing characters in a known manner. Such printers may also include the feature of dual printing to print dots between previously printed dots to form a higher quality printed character. With such a printer, it is also possible to print a condensed size character using only 4 wires and overprinting between the dots formed by the 4 wires.

Condensed Text Printing

Conventional wire matrix printers may include 9 wires for printing characters in a known manner. Such printers may also include the feature of dual printing to print dots between previously printed dots to form a higher quality printed character. With such a printer, it is also possible to print a condensed size character using only 4 wires and overprinting between the dots formed by the 4 wires.

When the 9-wire printer is available, one can print 2 lines at a time where condensed characters are utilized. Referring to the figure, the 0's are all printed during the first pass of the printhead across the paper. When the printhead has reached the end of the line, either the paper is moved one-half the distance between the printed dots or the printhead is moved one-half the distance between the printed dots. Thereafter, the printhead prints the X's shown in the figure. In this manner, two rows of characters of 5x7 matrix size are printed by a single 9-wire matrix printer. Further, the characters are approximately one-half the size of normal printed characters so that up to 4 times the amount of information can be placed on a given sheet.
