Abstract

Line adjustment is the process of adding and deleting carrier return codes in a sequence of text codes to provide relatively uniform text line lengths within an acceptable line ending zone without changing the grammatical structure of the text. With the present single line adjust technique a Line Adjust key is depressed by the operator to execute a programmed text adjustment function relative to the cursored line of Adjust key is connected to a timer which provides multiple line adjust enable signals in response to an extended depression time of the key. One line of text is adjusted for each short depression of the Line Adjust key or for each additional line adjust signal provided during an extended key depression. After adjustment of the line of text, the cursor is automatically moved to the start of the next line.

Single Line Text Margin Adjust

During adjustment, if errors occur or a Page End code is encountered, the cursor is moved to the Line End code of the line being adjusted. If the line being adjusted cannot be ended within the operator specified length of the line end zone, the system prompts the operator for a hyphenation decision before completion of the adjust process.
