Abstract

In using the Office Correspondence Retrieval System (OCRS) method of natural language retrieval, one of the major query areas not addressed by the prior art is a query of the nature "documents before a given date or documents after a given date or prior, etc." This article discloses a technique to handle this type of query utilizing a logically coordinated search on year, month, and a specialized set of date range query modifiers.

Office Correspondence Retrieval System Month/Year Range Processing

In using the Office Correspondence Retrieval System (OCRS) method of natural language retrieval, one of the major query areas not addressed by the prior art is a query of the nature "documents before a given date or documents after a given date or prior, etc." This article discloses a technique to handle this type of query utilizing a logically coordinated search on year, month, and a specialized set of date range query modifiers.

When the system receives a query it searches to determine if there is a four- digit numeric field starting with the digit 19, or if the query contains a month or some alphabetic abbreviation for a month. If either of these is detected, then the query is searched for one of the date query range modifiers, such as "before", "prior", "after", etc., within three words of the date information.

If a modifier is found, the system prompts the user with the statement, "It appears that a range of months and/or years is being specified, please enumerate the years and/or months of interest.~ The operator then has an opportunity to enter the months and/or years of interest as a particularization to the original query.

The OCRS accepts this information, incorporates it along with the original query, and then performs normal OCRS processing and document retrieval amended to the range of months and/or years specified.
