Abstract

Present platen indexing devices utilize a fixed input to a cam follower with a pull link attached between the cam follower and the bellcrank driving a pawl into the teeth of an index platen ratchet. The prior-art devices utilize a single solid link between the cam follower and the pawl bellcrank. By breaking the link, as illustrated in the figure, and forming the link of two separate links 10 and 12 interconnecting cam follower 14 and bellcrank 16, it is possible to still provide a pull on bellcrank 16 by the cam input to cam follower 14.

Present platen indexing devices utilize a fixed input to a cam follower with a pull link attached between the cam follower and the bellcrank driving a pawl into the teeth of an index platen ratchet. The prior-art devices utilize a single solid link between the cam follower and the pawl bellcrank. By breaking the link, as illustrated in the figure, and forming the link of two separate links 10 and 12 interconnecting cam follower 14 and bellcrank 16, it is possible to still provide a pull on bellcrank 16 by the cam input to cam follower 14.

It is further possible to provide the combined links 10 and 12 with an additional link 18 connected at the joining point between links 10 and 12. Link 18 may then be attached to a movable control member 20. A bias spring may also be attached to ground and the connecting point between links 10 and 12. As the cam follower 14 oscillates in response to the input of cam 24, links 10 and 12 will inherently pull into a straight line and will move downward, moving with them the end of link 18 and changing the relative position of spring 22.

As links 10 and 12 move downward, bellcrank 16 will oscillate clockwise, thus pushing pawl 26 into the teeth of ratchet 28. Ratchet 28 is attached to the platen and will rotate the platen upon rotation of the ratchet. The point of insertion of pawl 26 into the teeth of ratchet 28 is controlled by the index pawl guide 30 attached to the index selection lever 32. Further, depending from index pawl selection lever 32 is leg 34 which is engageable with a control surface on member 20 to cause member 20 to translate within its restricted guideway 36.

Thus, it can be seen that by shifting the index selection lever in a direction counterclockwise about its pivot 38, the pawl guide 30 is moved leftward and downward relocating the index pawl guide stud 40 with respect to the ratchet 28.
