A method for compensating for manufacturing variations in electrotherma printing ribbon is described.

Due to variations in manufacturing processes, the value of resistance in the resistive layer of a resistive ribbon will not be identical from one batch of ribbons to another. To provide the optimum electrical drive for each of these batches of ribbon, the ribbon cartridge is encoded at the factory to denote the resistance value of that ribbon. A variety of encoding techniques is available.

For example, the encoding may be in the form of holes which can be optically sensed in the printer. Alternatively, breakout tabs may be provided, and the configuration of these tabs sensed optically in the printer. Several resistors in series may be built into the ribbon cartridge and provided with shunts that can be selectively opened.

The encoded value can then be sensed by electrical connections to the cartridge from the printer. The encoded data is sensed and utilized in conjunction with a suitable compensation method to provide satisfactory compensation to produce high quality printing.
