Toner Test

This test provides a quantitative measure of the amount of free colloidal pyrogenic silica pigment (CAB-O-SIL*) in xerographic toner powder.

A sample quantity of toner to be tested is placed in an aluminum weighing dish about 1/4 inch deep. The toner surface is smoothed, and then the dish is placed on an electrical hot plate to melt the toner. Since molten toner does not wet CAB-O-SIL, if free CAB-O-SIL is present in the toner sample, flecks of CAB- O-SIL will be visible on the smooth surface of the toner sample.

The extent of free CAB-O-SIL can be quantified by the use of an image analyzer or a densitometer. * Trademark of Cabot Corporation.
