Two types of scanning ion print heads are illustrated for the generation of ion patterns for electrostatic printing. One type of head comprises a rotatory helical emitter and a linear orifice, and the other type comprises a knife edge emitter and a helical slot for communication between the emitter and orifice.

In Figs. 1 and 2, a print head 10 having a rotating helix generates ions for recording an electrostatic signal pattern on a web 11 of paper or dielectric material. The paper or dielectric material thereafter passes a development station where the electrostatic image is developed with toner. Subsequently the developed image can be fixed to the recording web 11 or transferred and fixed onto another web (e.g., paper). With transfer to another web, a means to remove residual toner from recording web 11 would be required prior to the next recording sequence.

The helical scan system in Fig. 1 employs helical emitter 12 which utilizes a fine emitter wire or similar element (knife edge, needlepoint array) wrapped about a cylinder. A high electrical potential 14 (3.5 to 5 KV) is applied between the helical corona-generating element 12 and a print orifice 15, producing emission and accelerating the ion beam to ground plane 16 behind the web. The orifice is in the form of an elongated slot. Thus, as the helix 12 rotates, the ion beam scans a line across the page.
