Abstract

Fig. 1 illustrates an exploded pictorial view of a vacuum-assisted conformal molding transfer press for transferring keybutton legends from a transfer sheet to various surfaces of a blank keybutton. The press provides a simple means for reliably establishing a precise location of the various workpieces relative to the transfer sheet and for producing intimate contact between the legend transfer sheet during the hot transfer process. Various transfers, such as decals, inks, dyes, foils, etc., may be employed depending on the nature of the transfer sheet utilized.

Fig. 1 illustrates an exploded pictorial view of a vacuum-assisted conformal molding transfer press for transferring keybutton legends from a transfer sheet to various surfaces of a blank keybutton. The press provides a simple means for reliably establishing a precise location of the various workpieces relative to the transfer sheet and for producing intimate contact between the legend transfer sheet during the hot transfer process. Various transfers, such as decals, inks, dyes, foils, etc., may be employed depending on the nature of the transfer sheet utilized.

The basic press mechanism consists of a locating fixture 1 forming a vacuum plenum chamber area 2 which is supplied with a source of vacuum (not shown) through an aperture and valve with apertures 4 communicating with the vacuum plenum. A number of blank keybutton workpieces 5 may be inserted into the apertures 4. The surface of the fixture 1 which abuts against the underside of the keybuttons 5 is sloped to tilt the keybuttons at a uniform angle to present a top and a front surface for better contact with the transfer sheet.

A precisely apertured rigid locating frame having apertures 7 in the precise key to key spacing grid and size necessary for precisely locating the keybuttons in a regular array is shown. A locating pin 9 on each end of the locating frame 6 interfaces with the precise aperture 8 in the surface of the locating fixture 1 to locate the frame 6 in precise orientation with respect to the frame 1. Similar locating pins 10 interface with apertures 11 in the transfer sheet to align the transfer sheet with its decal or transfer legend materials on it in precise orientation to the apertures 7 in the locating frame 6 and consequently in precise registration with the exposed surfaces of the blank keybutton 5 extending through the aperture 7 in the locating frame 6.

The rubber membrane of flexible sheet 12 abuts the top surface of the transfer sheet 13 sandwiching it against the top surface of the locating frame 6, with locating frame 6 in turn abutting against the surface 14 of fixture 1. When all of the elements have been put in place, vacuum is applied through aperture and valve 3 which causes the rubber membrane sheet 12 to deform, forcing the individual strips or tongues 15 in the transfer sheet 13...
