Abstract

A hinge structure for an access cover has pivot pins which can manuall be snapped into position in j-shaped seats at the edges of a base member opening. A cover lug extending into the base member prevents removal of the cover when it is in an open position. The cover can be removed only in its closed position and by means of a tool.

Cover Hinge Requiring Tool for Removal

A hinge structure for an access cover has pivot pins which can manuall be snapped into position in j-shaped seats at the edges of a base member opening. A cover lug extending into the base member prevents removal of the cover when it is in an open position.

The cover can be removed only in its closed position and by means of a tool.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the hinge components, which are integral with a cover 10 and a base member 12. Figs. 2 and 3 are partial cross-sectional views taken generally along lines A-A in Fig. 1. Fig. 2 shows the cover 10 in its closed position, while Fig. 3 shows the cover 10 in its fully open position.

The cover 10 includes a pair of integral downwardly-extending posts 16, only one of which can be seen in the drawings. Each post 16 carries a pivot pin 18. The cover 10 also carries an integral downwardly-extending lug 20 spaced slightly from the support post 16. The pivot pins 18 can be snapped into openings defined by J-shaped seats 22 integral with the base member 12. The top surfaces of the J-shaped seats 22 are part of a ledge 24 on which the cover 10 rests in its closed position. The base member 12 includes a louvered section 26 at the hinge end of opening 14 in base member 12.

The cover 10 is mounted in the opening 14 by lowering it onto ledge 24 while holding it in a horizontal or closed position. The pivot pins 18 ride down ramp surfaces 28 on the seats 22 and can be manually snapp...
