Programmable Function Keys for Display System

This idea relates to a data processing system including a display term having a keyboard. Normally each key when operated will result in the displaying of a character or the performance of a specific operation by the display.

According to this idea, one or more keys are programmed so that when such a key is operated it will cause a string of characters to be displayed at the cursor on the display. The string of characters which will be displayed can be a set of characters which has been previously constructed and displayed in a special area on the display and can, for example, be a commonly used set of characters, word or phrase. Alternatively, the string of characters which will be displayed can be selected from text already displayed on the screen.

By using the latter feature a portion of text can be copied from one position on the display to another position.

The display of the string of characters is performed solely under the control of the display subsystem and does not require interaction with a host computer. However, an application program in a host computer could be used to set up a string of characters for display under the control of a programmable key.
