Abstract

In impact typewriters, print line visibility must be provided to the typist. Consequently, the carbon ribbon is usually kept out of visibility obstructing position and therefore out of print position except at impact time when the typefont impacts a selected character onto the record medium (paper). Therefore, during the normal typing of a line of characters, the carbon ribbon is made to oscillate up and down in front of the platen. Also, efficient use of the carbon ribbon throughout its width implies ribbon oscillations at various amplitudes. The system proposed here enables performing controlled carbon ribbon oscillations.

The ribbon cartridge is provided with flexible arms extending from the cartridge storage zones toward the platen and holding the ribbon between typefont and platen. The cartridge sits on a ribbon support plate. The flexible arms are made to oscillate using a lift yoke connected to a lift arm, which lift arm is driven through a camming effect provided by a shuttle operated by a logic controlled stopper motor.

For printing, the shuttle moves from the visibility position (shown in the figure) to the right. The shuttle rides up a support stud on a print ramp, causing the ribbon support plate to pivot about its pivot.
