Abstract

In the conventional device, there is a fixed gripper tool configuration which restricts the kinds of items which may be picked up and, therefore, results in high cost. There is shown and described a modification to that gripper tool which permits two tools to be manipulated where formerly only one could be accommodated.

Universal Adapter for Interchangeable Gripper Tools

In the conventional device, there is a fixed gripper tool configuration which restricts the kinds of items which may be picked up and, therefore, results in high cost. There is shown and described a modification to that gripper tool which permits two tools to be manipulated where formerly only one could be accommodated.

In the upper figure, only one side of the double gripper tool is illustrated. It is to be understood that the other, the right hand side, is the mirror image of that shown. The gripper tool comprises a "hand" 1 for retaining the actual parts holder. A vacuum is created through outlet 2 in cavity housing 3 for holding a part in part holder 4.

The lower figure is a view of a part holder showing its universal adapter portion 5 which mates with cavity housing 3. Numerous part configurations are possible. However, each holder includes this universal adapter portion.

Each part holder 4 is held in place automatically by pin 6 when vacuum is applied through port 7. To release the part holders 4, positive pressure is applied and pin 6 is expelled from engagement with hand 1.
