Metastability Resolution Latch

This edge-triggered latch can resolve any metastability arising from an asynchronously falling data line without oscillation or ambiguous levels.

The current switch circuit 10 to 16 with emitter follower outputs 18 are joined together in two latch circuits 20 and 22. The latch 20 exhibits metastability but its response is non-oscillating, the output C hanging at threshold and balancing current switches 14 and 16. The clamped collector dot at -OUT, therefore, maintains a down level until latch 20 resolves itself. The curves are responses for the latches at various marked points in the drawing. Together the two latches 20 and 22 function as a compact high function D-type latch.
