Abstract

U.S. Patent 3,801,142 shows (Fig. 4) the structure of a disposable rotary seal. The rotatable fluid coupling includes a seal bearing assembly which is made of a felt ring supported in a housing of metal or other rigid material and acts as a bearing which supports and guides the lower rotating seal element. This article describes a plastic bushing which eliminates the felt ring.

Plastic Bushing

In the above figure, bushing 1 is formed from a pair of concentric cylinders 2 which are closed at one end thereof. Outer cylinder 2 contains a plurality of slits 3 which form the outer cylindrical wall 2 into a plurality of flexible sections.

The bushing is made of plastic and is disposed around the lower ceramic seal so that the closed end of bushing 1 is closer to the bearing surface of the lower ceramic seal. Bushing 1 reduces the forces required to rotate the seal and, in addition, results in easier assembly and lower cost fluid couplings.
