Abstract

The system shown above includes a base element 10 and a plurality of pluggable units 11 through 15, all with decorative covers. Unit 11 is a CPU, unit 12 is a power module, and units 13 through 15 are floppy and hard disc drive storage units. Base 10 provides structural integrity, and it contains the input-output connections and the interface between the various elements 11 through 15.

Base Pluggable Design

The system shown above includes a base element 10 and a plurality of pluggable units 11 through 15, all with decorative covers. Unit 11 is a CPU, unit 12 is a power module, and units 13 through 15 are floppy and hard disc drive storage units. Base 10 provides structural integrity, and it contains the input- output connections and the interface between the various elements 11 through
15.

The units 11 through 15 have indicator lights 11A through 15A, respectively, which indicate whether or not the units are functioning. The system includes internal diagnostic programs which activate the appropriate indicators 11A through 15A to indicate that the various units are operable.

Connector integrity and element mechanical latching are enhanced by the inherent normal forces generated by the weight of the various elements. This system lends itself to flexibility in design by both user and manufacturer in the quantity and placement of elements.
