Film Coating

This invention relates to film coating of particulate solids in a fluidized bed.

Film coating of particulate solids according to known techniques is obtained by creating a fluidized bed of solids by means of heated air introduced in the coating apparatus and by introducing coating agents into the bed. The evaporation of the solvent carrier of the coating agent is obtained by pre-heated air in the bed; coated particles are then cured in an extra oven.

This coating apparatus uses a fluidized bed whose air temperature is maintained through the whole process at a lower level than the temperature of evaporation of the solvent carrier, while the particulate solids in the fluidized bed are directly treated by a microwave generator. By controlling the operation of the generator, either the surface or the core of the solids may be treated.

The solids to be coated may be steel shots that are used in the developer component of xerographic copiers.
