In electromagnetic clapper-type armature systems, armature 1 is attrac by electromagnet 2 so that the upper part of the armature actuates the print hammer via a push rod (not shown).

After the coil energization has been switched off, the armature moves back to stop 3. For enhancing the print capacity, the armature, rather than being cuboid- shaped, is T-shaped (Fig. 2) or U-shaped (Fig. 3) or has a rectangular hollow profile (Fig. 4). Figs. 2 to 4 are cross-sectional views of the armature along line A-A in Fig. 1.

Such shapes lead to a concentration of the magnetic flux on the armature surface, faster demagnetization and thus to shorter switch-off times.
