The ribbon mechanism shown in the drawing permits the insertion of the drive wheel into a cartridge to act on the takeup spool within the cartridge to accomplish feeding.

Feed is accomplished by the oscillation of link 10 which in turn pulls feed arm 12 in a counterclockwise direction, effectively forcing pawl 14, in the form of a spring finger, into an aperture 16. As pawl 14 engages aperture 16 and is further rotated, the disk 18 carrying teeth 20 will be rotated. As small movements of link 10 are accomplished, the pawl 14 will continue to urge the disk 18 in small increments until such time as the pawl 14 is allowed to engage the next succeeding aperture 16.

Withdraw link 22 may be used to extract the entire ribbon feed mechanism from within the cartridge 24. As pawl 22 is pulled in the direction of the arrow thereon to withdraw the feed mechanism from the cartridge, the ribbon feed mechanism will rotate about pivot pin 26. To insure that any partial feeds of wheel 18 are held so that upon reinsertion of the feed mechanism into the cartridge 24, the wheel will begin rotating at its previous phase relationship between pawl 14 and aperture 16, a locking pawl 30, spring biased by spring 32, is provided and supported on support member 34.
