Clutch Seating Oscillation

The figure shows an arrangement for coupling a tape reel to a drive motor by means of a clutch comprising driven member 12 and driving member 13, each of which is provided with a series of teeth which are engaged as the reel is loaded onto the driving member 13.

In order to insure positive engagement of the respective teeth of the two members and to prevent point contact between the teeth as the members are engaging, the driving member is caused to oscillate or wiggle at a relatively low frequency. The oscillation is achieved by supplying a relatively small alternating current to the drive motor at the appropriate frequency. The current causes the driving member to wiggle as the driven member is being loaded.
