The discovery and rediscovery of these errors and the length of time to produce a new read-only store (ROS) and get it to the field demands a quick method of correcting these errors. Buried IPL (Initial Program Load) and patch card are too expensive for low-cost, high production machines. This is a method for machines having storage and loading facilities.

Errors in the system ROS are corrected by reading a bar code sheet or a magnetic disk that has a dispatch table to be loaded into a fast bipolar random- access memory (RAM) and new patch code into the system RAM. The bipolar RAM redirects those addresses of the system ROS which have bytes in error to the system RAM which has the corrected bytes.

In the field, the final microcode correction may be achieved through periodical release of bar code correction sheets or correction disks until most of the severe errors have been found. Then, a final release of the ROS may be made to correct all errors found up to that time.
