Abstract

This is an improved, both in performance and cost, one-step, coated carrier for carrying electropositive toner in electrophotographic developing. The carrier is formed of a suitable core material, such as steel shot, which is coated with an improved, mixed resin system. The improved resin system includes fluorocarbons, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and/or fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), dispersed in a polyamide (imide) resin binder. The mixed fluoropolymers in the polyamide (imide) resins are coated onto the steel core in a fluidized bed process.

This is an improved, both in performance and cost, one-step, coated carrier for carrying electropositive toner in electrophotographic developing. The carrier is formed of a suitable core material, such as steel shot, which is coated with an improved, mixed resin system. This improved carrier results in the following advantages: 1) One-step coating process, i.e., no double coating and curing. 2) Longer carrier life utilizing lower coating weights because of the continuous film of polyamide (imide) with PTFE and/or FEP dispersed in the film. 3) No toxicity problems because this is a water based system. 4) Reduced toner filming. 5) Resistance to spalling and abrasive wear. 6) Proper triboelectric charge.
