Calendar rolls can be cleaning during the manufacturing of flexible magnetic media by the use of a supply roll of wiping cloth pressed against the calender roll by a pressure roller.

In the production of flexible magnetic media used for flexible magnetic media products, a process known as calendering immediately follows the substrate coating and coating drying process. The calendering process consists of passing the coated media between rolls which are forced together under very high pressure and heated to an elevated temperature. The type of calender, known as supercalendering, used in the manufacture of most flexible magnetic media employs alternating calender rolls of dissimilar materials, one hard and the next relatively soft. The hard roll is made of steel, plated, and ground and polished as to a mirror finish. The softer roll is made of thin cotton or paper discs staked on a mandrel under extreme pressure. The media is calendered with the coated side against the polished steel roll. The action of the calender rolls on the media as it passes through the nips is a combination of heating, squeezing, rubbing, and compressing. The process densifies the coating, forces coating material into any microscopic holes which might exist, and smooths the coating while imparting a high gloss to the surface.
