Abstract

An adhesive for fastening a web of material, such as a magnetic tape, to the hub of a reel can be applied by a dispensing device and smoothed by a roller into a thin continuous film. The smoothing roller is driven by a cleaning roller that cleans the smoothing roller after each adhesive application cycle.

Adhesive Application for Reel Hubs

An adhesive for fastening a web of material, such as a magnetic tape, to the hub of a reel can be applied by a dispensing device and smoothed by a roller into a thin continuous film. The smoothing roller is driven by a cleaning roller that cleans the smoothing roller after each adhesive application cycle.

As shown in the figures, a reel hub 1 is positinaoned by a hub carrier 2 and drive clutch 3 adjacent the adhesive applicator system.

The adhesive dispenser assembly 4 is lowered to close proximity of the hub 1 and dispense beads of adhesive. The dispenser assembly 4 includes flange shields 5 to protect the flanges 6 of the reel from coming into contact with the adhesive.

At the same time the adhesive dispensing assembly 4 is dispensing the adhesive, the smoothing roller 7 is moved into contact with the hub. The smoothing roller spreads the adhesive beads into a thin, continuous film around the circumference of the hub. The smoothing roller 7 is rotated by the cleaning roller 8.

At the conclusion of the smoothing cycle, the smoothing roller 7 is retracted from the hub 1 and the dispensing assembly 4 is moved away from the reel. At the retracted position, the cleaning roller 8 revolves in the tank 9 of cleaning fluid to wash any excess adhesive from the smoothing roller before the start of another adhesive application cycle.
