Abstract

A single motor can drive both reels of a reel-to-reel tape drive system The drive and take-up reels of the unit are connected by shafts to a duplicate set of drive and take-up reels, which includes a separate web. The separate web is driven by a capstan directly connected to the motor. A suitable tension connection keeps the web tight on the duplicate take-up reel. A continuous ribbon can be used to drive the duplicate drive and take-up reels with the ribbon endlessly coupled around the outer diameter of the separate web.

A single motor can drive both reels of a reel-to-reel tape drive system The drive and take-up reels of the unit are connected by shafts to a duplicate set of drive and take-up reels, which includes a separate web. The separate web is driven by a capstan directly connected to the motor. A suitable tension connection keeps the web tight on the duplicate take-up reel. A continuous ribbon can be used to drive the duplicate drive and take-up reels with the ribbon endlessly coupled around the outer diameter of the separate web.

As shown in the figure, a standard reel-to-reel drive system comprises a supply reel 1, a take-up reel 2, a tension transducer 3, two tape guides 4 and 5, and a head element 6. A working tape 7, such as a magnetic medium, is shown threaded from the supply reel 1 to the take-up reel 2.

The driving system includes a single AC synchronous or DC motor 8 driving a capstan 9, which contacts a drive web 10, threaded onto a supply drive reel 11 and a take-up drive reel 12. A shaft 13 interconnects the drive reel 11 to the supply reel 1, and a shaft 14 interconnects the take-up drive reel 12 to the take- up reel 2.

In operation, the motor 8 drives the drive web 10 from the drive reel 11 to the drive take-up reel 12. The rotation of the drive reels 11 and 12 is exactly in conjunction with the tape medium passed from the supply reel 1 onto the take-up reel 2.
