Dehydration Via Gallium Activated Aluminum

Dehydration of liquid materials, such as alcohols, can be performed using aluminum with an aluminum oxide inhibiting agent of gallium or gallium-indium alloy.

Aluminum with the surface dissolved in gallium reacts with water, producing heat, hydrogen and aluminum oxide. The gallium is not significantly consumed.

The efficiency of the reaction is such that a pound of aluminum removes approximately one pound of water.
