Extended Life Magnetic Scanner

Magnetic hand scanner 10 has an operating head 11 constructed to provide for long service life without undue damage to the media scanned.

The head 11 has a magnetoresistive flux extender transducer 12, supported by a ceramic gimbal 13, having a polished outer surface and a radiused edge 14. A layer of magnetic material in transducer 12 conducts flux from the media to the magnetoresistive element in the transducer, thereby allowing significant wear of the transducer without damage to the magnetoresistive element inside the transducers. Gimbal 13 is held against the inside of shell 15 by sleeve 16. A threaded ring 17 is tightened to a preset torque to trap sleeve 16.
