Abstract

A conventional way of repairing a multilayer printed circuit board is to drill out a connector which is soldered in a plated through hole. In the conventional repair technique, an insulating sleeve is epoxied into the drilled hole and then a new connector is inserted in the center of the epoxy sleeve.

Threaded Repair Spring Contact

A conventional way of repairing a multilayer printed circuit board is to drill out a connector which is soldered in a plated through hole. In the conventional repair technique, an insulating sleeve is epoxied into the drilled hole and then a new connector is inserted in the center of the epoxy sleeve.

Shown above is an improved repair device which includes a threaded polymer sleeve 10. This threaded sleeve can be rotated into a hole which has been drilled in the circuit board. The threads seal the hole. Since the thread interface retains the assembly into the board, no epoxy is required. This eliminates potential contamination and clean up problems. Furthermore, no bake cycle is required to cure the epoxy.

As shown above, the threaded sleeve 10 has a spring connector 11 protruding from one end thereof and a wire 12 protruding from the other end. The wire 12 is connected to the spring contact 11. When the sleeve 12 is screwed into a circuit board, the wire 12 can be used to make a connection to the connector 11.
