Abstract

A cradle for loosely supporting a supply roll 10 comprises a ramp 11 an a transverse end plate 12. Paper 13 is pulled from the top of supply roll 10 by an incrementing take-up mechanism (not shown) between a non-rotating pressure roll 14 which compresses the paper against a fixed rotatable idle roll 15 located within opening 16 of ramp 11. As the supply roll 10 diminishes in size, the incremental motion pulling on paper 13 tends to cause supply roll 10 to move up the ramp 11. A supply stop 17, located below the pressure rolls 14 and 15, limits the upward motion of supply roll 10. Ramp 11 has a polymer coating on its upper surface for reducing friction between supply roll 10 which allows it to unwrap and move down the ramp to engage end plate 12 when the pulling of paper 13 ceases.
