Chip Carrier

A portable, multichip carrier assembly capable of carrying several size chips is provided. The assembly is machine-mountable, compact and readily adaptable to automated applications.

As shown in Fig. 1, the carrier assembly comprises three major parts, i.e., top cover 1, carrier body 3 and nest ring 5. As shown in the top view of Fig. 2, the chip nests may be arrayed around the body at locations adjacent the chip position indicators shown. In this regard, a blank space is provided in the nest ring corresponding to, for example, the 12 o'clock location so as to permit a closed position for the carrier. It is readily apparent that molded inserts for chip nests may be selectively placed within the body to accommodate different chip sizes. It is clear that the inserts may be either all one size or a mixed assortment of sizes.

As shown in Fig. 1, the carrier assembly may be mounted on mounting block 11 with the stem portion 6 of cover 1 holding the assembly in place via spring- loaded locking and locating pin 13. Actuating arm 15 is employed to disengage the pin, whereby the carrier assembly may readily be removed from mounting block 11. Mounting block 11 is, in turn, mounted onto a machine, a portion of which is shown at 17, with a bushing arrangement 19, for example, insuring relatively precise X/Y positioning on the machine.
