Abstract

Correct print impact velocity is critical in obtaining optimum print quality on single-element typewriters. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately measure the typehead velocity or impact force to guarantee good print quality. Techniques involving the use of load cells with quartz crystals to measure print impact force have several drawbacks including frequent rubber pad replacement, frequent transducer calibration, critical machine adjustments, costly electronics, and qualified technicians are required for operation and maintenance. These limitations prohibit the use of quartz load cells to measure impact force in anything but a laboratory environment. A method to accurately measure the typehead velocity or impact force which will allow continuous use in a quality control situation is described herein.

An alternative to impact force measurement to control print quality is to measure the typehead velocity with a simple pendulum. The print velocity pendulum measures typehead velocity immediately before impact. The typehead-rocker assembly 10 (Fig. 1) would strike a pendulum 12 during the free flight stage, and the resulting angular rotation Theta of the pendulum would be recorded. The peak angular rotation of the pendulum 12 would be a function of the rocker angular velocity Omega(1). The relationship between typehead velocity and pendulum deflection is based on conservation of energy during impact.
