Toggle Clamp for Head Disk Assembly

The disk file show in the figure comprises a head disk assembly (HDA) 10 and a voice coil motor (VCM) 11 mounted to a baseplate 12. The disclosed arrangement corresponds generally to the arrangement of these components in the IBM 3370 disk file.

The HDA 10 is a removable assembly from the baseplate 12 and the VCM
11. The HDA 10 is mounted in operative position relative to the VCM 11 and baseplate 12 by means of an over-center toggle clamp 14. Toggle clamp 14 comprises a handle 15 which is pivotally mounted by pin 16 attached to U- shaped base member 17, which in turn is attached to the side of the VCM 11. The spring strap 18 is pivotally attached to the handle 15 at about its mid-point, while the distal end 18A of the strap 18 is bent 90 Degrees so as to engage an end wall 19 of the HDA 10.

The over-center toggle clamp 14 provides a relatively straight forward, simple arrangement for making sure the HDA is properly clamped to the VCM.
