Abstract

Fig. 1 illustrates diagrammatically a magnet structure for a linear actuator in which a flat, rectangular coil armature may be moved with a force constant that varies less than 2% over the entire distance of its movement. The magnet structure comprises two pair of magnets 10U and 10L, an upper steel plate 11U, a lower steel plate 11L, and two steel side bars 13 and 14. A copper plate (not shown) may be attached to the inner surface of one of the steel plates 11 to reduce eddy currents.

Modular Linear Actuator with Flat Coil Voice Coil Motor

The steel plates 11 and the bars 13, 14 provide flux paths for the magnets 10, as show in Fig. 1.

The strength of the flux field is substantially uniform throughout the length of the magnet structure which results in very little change in the force constant as a function of the position of the coil 17, shown within the magnet structure in dotted form in Fig. 2, which is a flux path diagram with the return path removed for clarity.
