Probe Card Stiffener With Theta Adjust

This article teaches a probe card stiffener which minimizes probe card planar deflection under normal probe pressure and permits easy theta adjustment of the probe head to assure proper orientation.

This probe card stiffener and theta adjust eliminates two probing problems simultaneously. The stiffening effect strengthens the probe card under normal test conditions to improve card planarity by 78%. It also allows for theta positioning of the probes for proper orientation. The amount of theta travel is dependent upon the size of the slot used on the stiffener ring which may be manufactured and adopted to fit various size probes and cards.

Shown in the figure is a probe card 10 having mounted thereon four nylon blocks 11 which are provided with a tapped hole 12 into which a knurled screw 13 may be fitted. The card is further provided with a plurality of printed lines 14 to which are connected flexible leads 15. A central hole 16 is provided in the card through which a probe head 17, and a probe adapter ring 18 may pass. The probe adapter ring 18 fits within the inner circumference of an opening 19 in the stiffener ring 20 and is held therein by a multiplicity of screws 21 which pass through the inner wall of the stiffener ring 20.

The probe head 17 has a multiplexity of pins 22 extending therefrom which mate with female adapters 23 provided in the adapter ring 18.
