Abstract

A magnetoresistive (MR) element 1 is sandwiched between a single pole write element 2 and a second magnetic structure 3, as shown in the figure. The structure 3 and the single write pole, which are made up of a magnetic ``soft'' material such as permalloy, provide shielding to the MR element during the read mode in order to achieve an improved density response. During recording, the right edge of the write pole provides the last write field seen by the magnetic recording medium 4, as shown in the figure.

Vertical Recording Head

A magnetoresistive (MR) element 1 is sandwiched between a single pole write element 2 and a second magnetic structure 3, as shown in the figure. The structure 3 and the single write pole, which are made up of a magnetic ``soft'' material such as permalloy, provide shielding to the MR element during the read mode in order to achieve an improved density response. During recording, the right edge of the write pole provides the last write field seen by the magnetic recording medium 4, as shown in the figure.

A protective layer 7 is provided adjacent to the single write pole and insulation 8 is disposed between the write pole and the MR element, as well as between the magnetic shield and the MR element.
