The differential/brake drive shown in the figure allows the takeup speed to be more precisely controlled by the takeup idler/brake lever.

When the brake 11 locks spider gear ring 10, input equals output r.p.m. As the brake 11 is released and the ring 10 is allowed to slip, output r.p.m. is reduced. This allows control of ribbon takeup without stop/start problem created by the use of a conventional spring clutch.
